Strom Života (Tree of Life)
Not only a one week experience
NGO Strom Života has developed from the first youth conservation organisation in Slovakia, 25 years ago.
Objectives
- to have a positive influence on the development of children’s and youth’s personality and education
- conservation of the environment, preservation of listed buildings, cultural and historical monuments
ActivitiesYouth summer camps- the camp leaders and campers help to protect and preserve natural environment and cultural monuments, such as ruins of the Uhrovec Castle (13th century), the Komarno Fortress (the largest fortification system of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, in the 16-17th century), „Bird Island“ (in the Hrušovská zdrž Water Reservoir), the Holíč Manor-house (11th century), Havránok (the Celtic Open-air Museum) and much more.
- after the works, the team members may attend creative activities and games or discussions, focused on the positive development of their personality
Courses- for potential youth summer camp leaders
- for young people who are keen to partake in organising events for children and youths
- for teachers who are involved in the environmental and cultural programs (see below)
Environmental and cultural heritage programs:- members of Strom Života clubs (children and youths aged 6 to 19 years) learn to understand the environment, history and national traditions through creative games and activities under guidance of experienced leaders and tutors
Modré z neba (Azure of the sky)- the club members examine the air quality and measure the level of environmental pollution
Živá voda (Aqua Viva)- the club members observe the natural environment of a selected river and its surroundings
Zakliata hora (Cursed Mountain)- the club members help to recycle rubbish in households and schools
Vox luci - pupils and students collect used batteries (monocells) into special recycling containers
Krajina pokladov (Land of Treasures)- the club members visit local monuments and try to bring to light „still living history“ by looking up the public records and memories of the local elderly people
PublicationsStrom Života publishes textbooks focusing on the environmental education of children and young people and cultural heritage. Furthermore, Strom Života also publishes guide books containing instructions concerning how to survive in the woods, with useful tips and ideas for working with children and youths. For example, Náučné chodníky Slovenska (Historical paths and sites around Slovakia), Hráme sa na prírodu (Playing at the nature), Objavovanie lesa (Exploring the woods), Pomocník do lode (A little helper on the boat), Orientácia v teréne (Land navigation).
Strom Života also offers tutorials and methodical aids for Club leaders and teachers.
